ABITOLA releases his latest project titled ‘Kgosi Ya Strata’

In the vibrant tapestry of Botswana’s music scene, ABITOLA emerges as a figure of inspiration and innovation, with his latest project, “Kgosi Ya Strata,” marking a significant milestone in his career. This title, meaning ‘King of The Streets,’ wasn’t self-proclaimed but rather a coronation by the people, for the people. As ABITOLA journeyed through the heartlands of his country, sharing his art in every studio and every hood, the unanimous verdict was clear – he was their king, their voice.

“Kgosi Ya Strata” is more than an album; it’s a narrative woven from the fabric of life, ambition, and survival. It tells the stories of dreams birthed in the alleys and byways of Botswana, a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who dare to dream amidst the backdrop of a challenging music industry. This project dives deep into the essence of who ABITOLA is, reflecting on his world and the lifestyle that defines him, against the grain of a nation’s drinking culture and the dreams of making it out of the hood.

Musically, “Kgosi Ya Strata” is a pioneering venture into African Trap, advancing from the collaborative effort with Teddy West & Shaba Stele in “Kings 2 Gods.” It’s an exploration of Motswako within the new age African trap wave, aiming to forge a sound that resonates with Batswana’s soul while standing tall on the global stage. ABITOLA sought to create a sound that’s authentic and unique, capable of traversing international borders yet deeply rooted in Botswana’s culture.

Despite the myriad challenges faced by creatives in Botswana, ABITOLA views music as his sanctuary, a therapeutic realm where challenges morph into stepping stones. This project was crafted with a blend of passion and introspection, without the hindrance of specific challenges but rather the embrace of learning curves.

Among the tracks, “The Intro,” “Toro Tse Baya,” and “Ma7” are highlighted by ABITOLA as must-listens, promising a unique taste of his creative genius. The album’s production saw a collaborative spirit, notably during a studio camp at Jase Moods’ house in early 2022, where ABITOLA connected with a plethora of artists, some of whom feature in the album.

“Kgosi Ya Strata” aims to resonate with every Motswana, encapsulating a universal appeal rooted in local narratives. Collaboration remains a cornerstone of ABITOLA’s success, with this album featuring a mix of familiar voices like Shaba Stele and fresh talents like Vigos,Umlazi, Rigbie,4oxttino and Lunar Parkz, heralding a new era of sound and creativity.

“Kgosi Ya Strata” is not just an album; it’s a beacon of hope, a testament to the power of music, and a declaration that even in a country with a burgeoning music scene, dreams can indeed become reality.
